A guard only protectsthe height it covers

Bolt a short guard to a column that gets hit above it and you have bought a decoration. Where protection goes, and how tall it is, comes from where the damage is actually landing — and that is something an inspection measures.

What the standard lists

Eight measures, and most of them are not products

CSA A344 sets out eight ways to protect racking from damage. The column guard is the one everybody knows. Five of the other seven are decided while the racking is being designed.

  • Column guards at the base of the frames
  • Cant-leg frames, which move the foot of the column out of the path
  • More anchors, or larger ones
  • Doubled columns where the exposure is worst
  • A heavier bottom horizontal brace
  • A heavier bottom diagonal brace
  • Row-end protectors where a run meets an aisle
  • Truck guidance, mechanical or electronic

Items two to six are frames and bracing. They are ordered with the racking, or they become a rebuild later — which is the argument for settling protection while a system is being designed rather than after the first column is bent, and it is the part no guard catalogue can sell you.

Protection is a measurement problem, not a catalogue problem.

A guard protects the height it covers and nothing above it. The Québec prevention guide puts it plainly: a guard that is too short is no use where the damage is happening higher up. An inspection is what tells you where the impacts are — which aisle, which bay, and at what height off the floor.

Guards absorb the hit. These decide what the hit does — and none of them arrives in a box.

Tying the rows
A single row that is not tied back-to-back is far more likely to be overturned or to collapse once it is damaged, at exactly the same rated capacity. Stability and capacity are two different questions, and the load plaque only answers one of them.
The right bar for the job
A safety bar stops a load falling through the bay. It is not designed to carry a load on its own. A support bar is — for the pallet that cannot sit properly on the two beams. Using one as the other is common, and it is the kind of thing an inspection records as operating practice rather than as damage.
Anchors
Wherever lift trucks work, anchoring the frames to the floor is recommended in every case, and adding anchors or increasing their size is itself one of the eight measures. Sheared or missing anchors are among the first things an inspection goes looking for.
Where the trucks drive into the structure
In drive-in and drive-thru racking the truck enters the rack itself, so contact is not an accident — it is the operating mode. Contact risk is high by design, and the column guards inside the tunnels have to be anchored to the floor to do anything at all.

From the finding to the fix

  1. The pattern in the report

    Repeated damage at the base of frame columns is the standard's own signal that guards or a change of layout are needed. One bent column is an incident. The same bay twice is a design problem.

  2. Measure where it lands

    Which aisle, which column, which face, and at what height off the floor. Protection specified without this is a guess with a purchase order attached to it.

  3. Choose the measure, not the catalogue

    Sometimes it is a guard. Sometimes it is a cant-leg frame, a heavier bottom brace, an end protector, or moving the pick face so the truck stops turning there. The answer is sometimes the layout rather than the steel.

  4. Check it at the next inspection

    Findings carry forward. If the same bay is still being hit, the measure was the wrong one or it was set at the wrong height — better learned a year later than five.

From the record, not from a walk-round. An inspection locates damage by aisle and by bay and grades it, so the pattern shows itself: the same face, the same corner, the same height. Repeated damage at the base of frame columns is the standard's own indication that guards or a layout change are needed. Without that record, protection gets bought by the pallet and installed wherever it is easiest to install.

They change what a hit does. They do not make racking hit-proof, and nothing on this page will. All rack damage reduces the structure's real capacity, so protection buys margin rather than immunity — it works alongside inspections, operator training and a layout that does not force a turn in front of a column.

They protect the people underneath, not the racking. A safety bar prevents a load falling through the bay; it is not designed to carry the load itself. If a pallet cannot sit properly across the two beams, what it needs is a support bar, which is designed for exactly that. The two look alike on a quotation and are not interchangeable.

Repair first, then protect what was repaired. Damage reduces capacity now; a guard only changes what the next impact does. Red findings come out of service immediately, the repair is designed and certified by an engineer, and the protection is then specified from the same report that graded the damage — which is how the guard ends up where the impacts actually are.
