Light cartons invite narrow aisles, an extra beam level and a taller run — and every one of those changes what an upright is carrying. Capacity certification first, inspection second, for electronics sites across Québec.

Built for one configuration, used in another
None of these are mistakes. Each was a sensible decision about space, taken years apart from the others, and none of them arrived with a new calculation.

Why the number moves
The reassuring version goes like this: our pallets are light, the racking is rated well above them, so there is margin. It is half true. A rating describes a configuration as much as a weight — how far apart the beam levels sit, how the frame is braced, how high the first horizontal is and how it attaches. Move the beams and the number moves with them, whether or not anything got heavier.
The other half is the pallets. Component capacities are minimums, and they are calculated on the maximum weight of everything the component supports, with no reduction for average weights or fill factors. A high SKU count means a wide spread of pallet weights, and it is the heavy end of that spread — the batteries, the power supplies, the pallet of finished units nobody thinks of as heavy — that sets what the bay is rated for.
That is why a capacity report usually comes before the annual inspection in an electronics building rather than after it. An inspection measures damage against what the racking is allowed to carry. Where nobody can say what that is, the grading has nothing to work from.
Very narrow aisle
A different damage pattern
A guided truck does not wander, so the random low-level impact of a wide aisle largely stops. What replaces it is narrower, more repetitive and harder to reach.
- Guidance is a protection measure
- Mechanical or electronic truck guidance sits in the standard's own list of damage-protection measures, alongside column guards, heavier bottom bracing and additional anchors. It works — which is a reason to read the damage that remains carefully rather than dismiss it.
- There is no room for a bolt-on guard
- A column guard projects into the aisle, and an aisle sized to the truck has nothing to project into. Protection here is specified into the structure — the frame, the bracing, the anchoring, the guide rail — rather than added afterwards.
- Plumb stops being cosmetic
- For racking to have its rated capacity it should be installed plumb and level, and a guided truck working at the top of a tall run is unforgiving about both. Out-of-plumb columns are on the inspection list in every building; here they become an operations problem well before they are a structural one.
- Taking a bay out of service costs more
- One truck serves the aisle. Unloading and isolating a bay means occupying that aisle while it happens, so a red finding is scheduled around the shift rather than around the bay. We would rather know which runs those are before we walk them.

Questions we get
Because the rating belongs to a configuration as much as to a weight, and because it is set by the heaviest thing the bay will ever hold rather than the usual thing. If beams have moved, a level has been added or a run was extended, the number on the plaque describes a rack that no longer exists. CSA A344 is also unusually direct here: rack capacity must be determined by an engineer familiar with the guide — it is one of the few places the guide says must rather than should.
A calculation, not a demolition. Reconfiguring racking or moving beams is not permitted without an engineer's approval or certified documents, because it can create an overload condition, and a reconfigured system has to be re-certified. In practice we measure what is there, re-rate it, and issue plaques for the configuration you are actually running. What comes back is a number that describes your racking, which is the only one worth posting on it.
Partly. Most of the walk happens with the racking loaded and the building running, and the aisles that need the truck out of them are identified from your layout beforehand. Two things want the aisle: a section that has to come off load before a permanent deformation can be measured properly, and the top levels of a tall run, where a close look needs access equipment rather than a view from the floor.
