Nine industries, one guide, one engineer's seal. What changes from building to building is what hits the steel, what the beams carry, when you can afford to close an aisle, and who asks for the record.
What differs
Four variables, and the standard is not one of them
They decide how often we come, what we look at first, what we quote, and what we specify when something has to be replaced. Every industry page on this site is these four, answered for one kind of building.
- What hits the steel
- In most buildings it is a lift truck, low on a column, in the same three bays by the turn or the dock door. In some it is not mechanical at all — a wash-down, a freezer door cycling, road salt tracked in all winter, a vapour that settles on the anchors. The first is visible from the floor. The second is only visible if somebody is reading the coating.
- What the beams actually carry
- A rated bay is the sum of the heaviest loads it will ever hold — no averages, no fill factor. That arithmetic behaves differently under steel coil than under totes, and it is why racking that has been fine for a decade can fail a calculation the month the product changes.
- What a closed aisle costs
- The variable nobody writes down. In a 3PL an aisle is a contract line; in a plant it is line-side cover measured in hours; in a grocery DC in November it is not available at any price. It decides whether a red finding is repaired tonight or the bay stays empty and isolated until Sunday.
- Who asks for the record, and when
- An insurer at renewal. A client auditor with a checklist older than the racking. An inspector, after somebody gets hurt. A buyer in due diligence. They give different notice and want different documents, and safety requirements often reach rack certification and capacity directly.
None of that changes the standard. Racking is inspected against the same CSA A344 in a freezer as in a body shop, the engineering acts are reserved in both, and the report is sealed by the same engineer. That argument is made once, in the compliance wing, rather than nine times here.
How racking wears out
Damage arrives two ways
One takes a second and leaves a mark you can point at. The other takes three winters and looks like nothing, until a component is thinner than it was. A programme built for one walks past the other.

Specifying for the building
The environment picks the system, not the pallet count
Density is the easy half of a specification. What the air does to the steel, what the truck does in the aisle, and what has to be reachable on the night shift settle the rest.
- Single-deep, when access wins
- Every pallet reachable from an aisle: the lowest density and the easiest access. It is the right answer more often than density arguments suggest, because a building that picks by line rather than by pallet spends its life in the aisle.
- Drive-in and drive-thru, when floor area is the constraint
- The most pallets per square metre, paid for by driving the truck inside the structure — so contact happens where it is hardest to see, and column guards belong on floor anchors from the first day. Worth knowing before you standardise on it: a tunnel cannot be inspected from outside, so part of it comes empty on inspection day.
- Pallet flow and push-back, when rotation is the rule
- Pallet flow loads one end and picks the other, which is what a dated product needs. Push-back loads and picks from one aisle and returns the last pallet in first. Perishables usually settle that argument without help.
- Cantilever, when the load has no pallet
- Pipe, bar, panel, roll goods — anything long enough that a bay is the wrong shape. Arms take end stops so nothing rolls off the front. It is not a pallet rack and does not belong to that family, but it is engineered, installed and certified by the same people.
- Specified against what the building does to it
- Galvanizing where the environment is corrosive. Doubled columns, a heavy bottom horizontal and diagonal, cant-leg frames, row-end protectors and truck guidance where the aisle is the problem. Both are decisions taken before the steel is bought, and both cost far less there than inside a repair programme.
