Corrosion is damagethe same as a dent

Freezers, coolers and wash-down floors attack racking through the room it stands in, without anybody hitting anything. OTS inspects, certifies and repairs the steel in all three — and specifies the finish it should have had.

The same racking, two different lives

A food site usually runs a freezer, a cooler and an ambient warehouse in the same building, and the racking in them is not having the same experience. An inspection that treats them alike misses half of what is happening.

In a corrosive environment, the finish is not a preference.

CSA A344 states it without hedging: racking installed in a corrosive environment must be galvanized. A room that condenses on every cold surface, and a floor hosed down at the end of a shift, are both corrosive in the ordinary sense of the word — so a painted frame in either is a replacement with a date on it rather than a saving.

The system

Rotation chooses before density does

In most warehouses the storage system is picked on density and rotation is managed around it. Where the stock carries a date, that order reverses — and getting it the wrong way round is expensive in steel and in product.

Pallet flow — first in, first out, built in
Loaded at one end and picked at the other, so the oldest pallet is always the one at the face. The CSST prevention guide names it as the system suited to perishable goods, and it is what lets a food site run real density without managing dates by hand.
Push-back — density, but last-in, first-out
Loaded and picked from the same aisle, so the last pallet in comes out first. That suits long shelf life or a fast, complete turn; it works against a short date code, and no amount of discipline changes the geometry.
Drive-in — the most cubic metres inside a cold envelope
The cheapest way to fill a refrigerated room, and the hardest place to see damage: the truck drives inside the structure and strikes columns nobody walks past. Guards on those columns, anchored to the floor, belong to the design here — and the tunnels have to be partly emptied before the racking can be assessed.
Single-deep — where the range is wide
Lowest density, every pallet reachable. A plant running many recipes or many pack formats in small quantities is usually better served by this than by a dense system that buries half the range behind the other half.
Mobile racking — the aisle back
Racking on carriages that close the aisles until one is called for. High density and low throughput, which suits a cold room holding buffer stock far better than it suits a pick face.

What the inspection has to get past

Cold storage is not an ordinary warehouse that happens to be cold. What gets examined is the same list the standard sets out; what changes is everything standing between the inspector and that list.

  • Frost and ice at the base plate, over the exact band where trucks do their damage
  • Ice under the bottom pallet, where the floor anchors sit
  • Corroded columns — a structural finding in the standard, listed alongside impact
  • Beam connectors and safety pins seized, so a level cannot be moved without damaging it
  • Deep racking, which cannot be judged without partly emptying the tunnels
  • The temperature line at the dock, where warm air meets cold and settles on the first runs
  • Racking leaning on the cold-room envelope, which the standard counts as a fragile structure
  • Clearance under the sprinkler heads, lost as soon as a pallet is built taller than the plan

Which service leads here is not what it is in a dry warehouse. The inspection still sets the baseline, but the finding that costs money in a cold room is corrosion — answered by replacing the affected components and by specifying galvanized steel for the next run, not by the impact repair that carries a distribution centre. Access is the other half, and it is settled from your layout before the door opens.

Questions we get

No. The requirement to galvanize is about what goes into a corrosive environment; what is already standing is judged on its condition. An inspection tells you where corrosion has actually reached — a corroded column is a structural finding, not a cosmetic one — and the standard's answer is to replace or repair the affected components. Where a run is being replaced anyway, galvanized is what replaces it.

Yes, in sessions. The sequence is planned from your layout so the crew knows the order before the door opens, and the runs that have to come off load are agreed in advance with your team. The one thing that cannot be worked around is deep racking: a drive-in tunnel cannot be assessed from outside it, so those bays have to be partly emptied whatever the temperature.

Not by itself, and it is what a food floor requires. What matters is what the water finds — a broken coating, a shim under a base plate, an anchor pocket. Galvanized steel takes it; painted steel takes it until the coating is opened, and then the corrosion starts where nobody looks. Corroded components become a finding at the next inspection, and the answer is replacement or an engineered repair, not another coat of paint.

Through the same door as everything else stored above product: a pallet that comes down is a contamination event as well as an injury. In Québec the racking half of that is an engineering question — assessing damage and calculating a capacity reduction are acts reserved to a member of the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec — so what you can hand an auditor is a sealed report rather than an internal checklist.
